What a stupid law. I have seen my couple of friends in the same situation too near the Canadian border where they were asked for their passports and they did not have them ( of course not !! ) . They were travelling to Vermont and never crossed the border .
But one thing to think about is that is carrying your passport and your H1 ( or whatever visa you hold ) original documents with you at all times safe. There is a good chance of them getting stolen \lost since obviously you can't carry them in your pocket like your wallet .
This is totally ridiculous. This is one of those strange laws that appear in news about states having silly laws ...

i guess he is talking about your case a)...
although it might be his own opinion which could be wrong but seems from his forums he does tell you valid points time to time....

I dont want to undermine the need of the hour to contribute to IV/other efforts however-
From the content it appears the DHS secretary may not approve "a petition by an employer" for "any visa" authorizing employment in the United States unless the employer has provided written certification.
This means that H1B and I-140 filed by any employer cannot be approved if they have not provided written certification regarding Layoffs. This further enforce Labor Certification and clients who are laying offing citizen/perm and then replacing them with H1B holder.
EAD renewals are not "Visa" filed by employer that authorize employment. So I think that is excluded.
What this seems to target are companies that layoff existing US employee citizen and immidiately replace/hire ppl on H1B or file labor certification/I140 for others. (e.g. Microsoft other companies which are replacing existing employees with H1B - for lower pay?).

You hear about the 1 crore offers that IIM students get from top American companies? Well, they are kicked out of the job in 1 year and then join Infosys or Wipro. Not because they are not brilliant but because their conversational skills are terrible and so is their language.
Really - and what anecdotal / statistical evidence do you have to make such claims?
I agree that typical MBA jobs require more human interaction than an IT/engineering job and hence it is important to understand the host culture in which you operate - but making claims that IIM grads get kicked out after a year are BS.

ROW world has a quota of 149,200 and pending applications of 100 + 44,800 = 44,900.
Lets say EB1, EB3 ROW uses 30K which I doubt will be far less than that, so there will be 70K visas just from ROW to spill to EB3 ROW. If DOS/USICS decides not to waste the Visas definetly EB3 Mexico and India should get a good share of that 70k. This 70k should even be more as there might be some unsed EB1.
THIS IS ALL VOID IF EB2 I C and EB3 ROW becoming Current before Jul 2011 and also if they start quarterly spill over.

To be fair, inability to get educated (linked to career progression) deserves some attention.
I was in gautamagg's situation earlier (I am still kind of ). I believe there are several others in the same situation. GC delay is an serious hindrance when age is a factor for getting education. However, there are alternatives - part-time education and studying in another country. Have friends who have taken both the approaches. You can come back to the U.S (if you really need to) after your education/experience through H1 again.
As far as the U.S loosing talent, U.S legislators/administrators are the ones who should be worried and try to stop it. The coveted trying to convince them seems contradictory and doesn't gel well.
Personally, I think expecting a quick solution for the mired immigration issue to get an education is expecting a little too much when there are alternatives. This is a wrong forum to do it too.

Hi All, This could happen in a border state. Look, there is no need to get hyped up about this. It is my 12 year of living in a border state ( the northern border). First lived 12 miles frin the border, now about 75 miles. We have never faced this problem, neither has any one of at-least a few dozen people that I know.
Maybe the CBP had some specific information about a vehicle carrying some person(s) of interest to the US government or CBP, or some vehicle carrying contraband.
Anyways, my point is, there is simple solution to this issue. Make clear (colored, if possible)) photocopies of your and your family's passport front page, Visa page and I-94 cards and keep those in each of your vehicle's glovebox. I am sure, these along with a Driver's License will be enough to convince all but the stupidest CBP officer.
For those, who have EAD, carry it with you That simple.
