Top 10 Truly Extreme Noses

10
Goblin Shark
Goblin-Shark-Thumb
When schnoz meets Jaws.
It’s amazing this shark manages to eat with that enormous snout sticking out of his face. You could probably land planes on that thing. And who knows what it’s good for–it’s probably the product of ridiculous evolutionary female choice selection. Or maybe the Cloverfield monster uses goblin sharks as darts, and only allows those with the biggest noses to survive. In any case, its rostrum exceeds any other shark’s in relative size, which is pretty darn extreme.

9
Fei Jianjun
Rhinocarcinoma12
Meet Fei Jianjun. One day, he discovered an unpleasant red bump on the tip of his nose, but did not seek medical attention due to poverty. Over the next year, his honker enlarged to the size pictured above, so large that his eyes were literally pushed to sides of his face, earning him “diseased freak status” in his village. As such, Fei rarely left his house, as he was thought to be a vector for illness. To boot, it shouldn’t come as much surprise that, once your nose swells to the size of an apple, considerable pain results. Eventually, a local hospital offered him free surgery, and a CT scan revealed that the cause of his troubles was a rhinocarcinoma, which they shrank via radiation.
In general, the whole situation is undilutedly awful, but he did get free healthcare out of it. And any nose that gets you free healthcare is an extreme nose.

8
Monoclonius
Monoclonius
The rhinoceros has a pretty extreme nose. Its name means “nose horn”, after all. But why include a silly rhinoceros on this list when a much larger, much more extreme version of such a nose once sniffed the earth?
Of all the unicorn-like ceratopsids, the monoclonius has, by far, the largest nose horn. At 2.7 m in height, this brawny beast could snag a white rhino on its horn and toss it like a plush toy. You could also wrap lights around it and pretend it was a small Christmas tree. You know the holidays get extreme when you use a dinosaur nose to supplement decorative traditions.

7
Adrien Brody
Adrien Brody
Adrien Brody’s nose is the Mount Everest of Hollywood schnozzes. It dwarfs other actors’ noses and cackles maniacally, screeching tyrannical nose insults in the form of snot rockets. It towers menacingly, Barad-dur-like, growling malediction in the language of Mordor. It snores, and tectonic plates shift. And so on.
Brody’s nose is also probably partially responsible for landing him his role as Jewish-Polish pianist WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Szpilman, in The Pianist. His masterful portrayal of said role then landed him an Oscar, not to mention the opportunity (which was taken) to ravish Halle Berry with a kiss. Getting an Oscar and making out with Halle Berry? That’s an extreme nose.

6
Hammer-Headed Bat
Hammer Headed Bat Thumb[3]
Bats tend to look fairly hilarious. Some have enormous ears, and some have enormous noses. In fact, the aptly-named hammer-headed bat’s nose exceeds the volume of its brain by a factor of at least 2. It also contributes heavily to the species’s sexual dimorphism, with only males possessing the enlarged rostrums. These noses, in addition to lengthened mouth cavities and larynxes, enable male hammer-headed bats to emit loud honks.
It probably comes as no surprise that the caliber of these honks influences how sexually attractive the males are to coeds. This phenomenon can be seen in full-throttle when males gather together, often around riverbanks, to compete for mates in a behavior known as lek mating. Effectively, a gaggle of males sit around trying to out-honk each other while the females fly around listening in for the finest honks, much like a bar scene where scads of males try out their pickup lines. Since nose size contributes to the quality of the honks, females select for the finest, and probably most pronounced, noses. When a nose determines whether one gets laid or not, one must submit to the extremity of said nose. Plus, these fellows can allegedly be used as hammers. And hammers are useful.

5
Cyrano de Bergerac
Jose-Ferrer-Cyrano-De-Bergerac
Like many great men, the fictional Cyrano de Bergerac falls in love with his cousin, Roxane. And, also like many great men, Cyrano is profoundly ugly, due in large part to his large nose, which causes him great distress. People, cruel as they must be to make Cyrano pitiable, say that his nose is large enough to be used as an umbrella.
In the eponymous play, Cyrano demonstrates mastery of duelling, music, wit and so on. He also writes beautiful love sonnets and the like, but is too shy to approach his buxom cousin with them. Meanwhile, she falls in love with the handsome, but stupid, bloke who hasn’t the parlance to charm her. This mentally-impaired Adonis asks Cyrano to furnish him with the verbiage to fully woo Roxane, which Cyrano agrees to do. Roxane eventually falls in love with these words, and when she finally discovers that it is Cyrano who was behind them, she falls for him, nose and all. Of course, to be properly depressing/moving, she admits her love to Cyrano as he is dying.
If we are to subscribe to the Sixteen Candles-y notion that ugly people persevere as sharp-witted, successful and talented, all of Cyrano’s skills owe themselves to his nose. Plus, it can apparently be used to shield people from rain. Totally extreme.

4
Proboscis Monkey
Proboscismonkey2
This monkey’s nose is so extreme that people just call the animal it’s attached to the proboscis monkey. It’s the nose monkey. You see that guy over there, with the nose? Yeah, that’s the proboscis guy.
As with hammer-headed bats, nose size in proboscis monkeys underscores a sexual dimorphism in the species. While female proboscis monkeys have fairly prominent noses, they don’t quite have the Kilroy-was-here factor that the males do. And, once again as with hammer-headed bats, we can be sure nose size plays into how hot male proboscis monkeys are to the ladies.
It would be fair to say that proboscis monkeys can have erections for noses. As is the case with most cardiovascular animals, proboscis monkeys experience increased heart rate when they’re excited. As the excitement rises, so does the level of blood saturation in their nasal tissue. With noses engorged thus, a resonating chamber is created that can amplify the sound of calls, especially warning signals. This is quite useful; if one proboscis monkey detects danger, he will become fearful and therefore excited, thus making him better at communicating danger to his compatriots. Super-siren nose that makes you look like Squidward? Extreme.

3
Pinocchio
14773B2971C73B-43.-Pinocchio
This kid can’t tell a lie without his nose erupting outward like the Ruyi Jingu Bang when Sun Wukong needs to steal cookies from the top shelf. Think about the implications; to weaponize that honker, all Pinocchio needs to do is stand in front of someone, point his nose at their eye, and say, “I’m a real boy! I’m a real boy!” Too bad he gave up his superpower, it was pretty extreme.

2
Star-Nosed Mole
Star-Nosed-Mole-1
Most animals interpret the topology of their environments with favor to a particular sense. Humans favor sight. Dolphins favor sound. Moles favor touch. And the star-nosed mole possesses the most highly-developed touch organs known, right in its nose.
It would be an understatement to say that the star-nosed mole has two hands growing out its face. It wouldn’t even suffice to say it has four. Not to mention that a light knock to your hands does not kill you. Needless to say, star-nosed moles have mighty sensitive sniffers. This super-sensitivity results from clusters of mechanoreceptors that project up through columns of epidermal cells from the dermis up to the skin’s surface. These structures are made of familiar things–skin cells, nerve endings, and so forth–but their arrangement is so specialized as to earn them the title of “organs” (Eimer’s organs, specifically). And a star-nosed mole’s nose has about 25,000 of them, and it’s only 1cm wide. Your nose barely even contains that many tactile nerve endings.
An article in Nature dubbed the star-nosed mole that “fastest-eating animal” (segues to a fastest-eaters edition of The Most Extreme, but that’s for another time). The heavy myelination of Eimer’s organ neurons improves signal transmission from the sense organs to the mole’s brain, where analysis of the edibility of an object can take as little as 120 milliseconds, which borders on the limits of neuronal transmission speed. This animal’s nose helps it evaluate food in 120 milliseconds. Extreme.
As if that wasn’t enough, the star-nosed mole can smell underwater by exhaling nose bubbles onto something it wants to smell and then inhaling them. How extreme is that?

1
Elephant
Elephant-Gross
Elephants are sort of extraordinary. They’re the largest living land animals, they mourn their dead, have conveyor belts for teeth, and destroy civilizations when they’re sexually frustrated. Oh and they paint, too.
They also have trunks, which are, of course, just awesome noses.
Elephant trunks are, in many ways, the equivalents of human hands. Elephants use them to greet one another, embrace and play. They use them to pick things up and put food and water in their mouths. They can bathe themselves by sucking up water into the body of the trunk and then spraying it on themselves. They can snorkel. They can pick up tiny seeds without crushing them, plant them, wait for a tree to grow, and then uproot it. And, naturally, they can use their trunks to forage for or store goods in the butts of other elephants. The trunk is a nose that knows no bounds.
And of course, elephants have stupendous olfactory senses, which are augmented by their ability to direct their trunks towards or away from the sources of aromas. Extreme? Yes.

Top 10 Worst Blockbusters In Recent History

10
The Day After Tomorrow
2004
The-Day-After-Tomorrow
The cold chases Jake Gyllenhaal down a hallway. That’s right, the cold. Chases him. Down a hallway. Also, in order to create some sort of quasi-deep commentary on survival, the characters discuss the merits of burning books in a library to stay warm, while being SURROUNDED by wooden tables and chairs. This movie made me wish that Global Warming would hurry up and put us out of our misery already.

9
Armageddon
1998
Armageddon
This guy sums the plot up much better than I could, so, take it away hilarious, random internet movie snob:
“So, Billy Bob Thornton is, like, the Boss of NASA or whatever (LOL), and he is like “we have got to fuck up this asteroid,” and some guy is like “we’ll just nuke it,” and Billy Bob Thornton is like “we can’t nuke it because of some made up reason,” and so they decide that the only way to destroy the asteroid and save the Earth is to talk to Bruce Willis, the Best Oil Driller in the World. Oh boy, here we go. Meanwhile, out on the oil rig, Bruce Willis is hitting golf balls at a Greenpeace boat because he is a MAN. It’s hilarious and stupid how you work to make the world a better place based on deeply held personal beliefs when you should be shooting at Ben Affleck with a shotgun because he is having sex with your daughter, Liv Tyler. The army is like “Mr. Bruce Willis, please come with us, asteroid time,” and Bruce Willis is like, “Ben Affleck is fired.” And I don’t even know what the big deal is anyway, because if we learned anything from Deep Impact it’s that when the asteroid hits Earth you just need to run up a tall hill.

So, NASA is going to send a team of astronauts into space to land on the asteroid (sure) and drill a hole in it (yes) and fill the hole with a nuclear device (absolutely). But Bruce Willis is like “you guys are so stupid, the only way to do this is to send me into space.” OH, HOLD ON, WHAT? Nevermind, because it gets so much better a few seconds later when Bruce Willis is like “and I want to take my own team with me.” Take your own team with you? Into space? To land on an asteroid? And drill a hole in the asteroid and put a nuclear bomb in that hole? Better bring Daniel Farraday with you. You don’t want things to get ridiculous.

So, Bruce Willis hires all his pals, and surprise: they are so wacky and out of control! Oh, and he hires Ben Affleck, even though he just fired Ben Affleck? Also, Ben Affleck already has his own oil company but it has been literally 24 hours since he was working for Bruce Willis? How did he get an oil company so fast? These are the types of questions we might have time to wonder if that asteroid wasn’t coming straight for us! Of course, it’s hard to imagine a group this ragtag going into space, but they are the only chance we have. Most astronauts train for years to go into space, but these oilmen will only have 12 days. Insert 45 minute training sequence. Now they are ready to go into space! First stop is the international space station where there is a kooky Russian cosmonaut who has space cabin fever and then there is another 45 minute sequence involving fuel lines and space fires and oh no Ben Affleck almost dies but then he doesn’t die at all phew but then a few minutes later he almost dies again but he still doesn’t die. But some people die. Because his ship (one of two!) gets hit by a meteor and crashes on the asteroid. (You know how things in space are always crashing.)”

8
Waterworld
1995
Waterworld
Waterworld won 4 Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor (Kevin Costner) and Worst Supporting Actor (Dennis Hopper). It cost something like $200 million to make back in the mid-90s which, adjusted for inflation, is about $45 billion today (I think my math is right). Kevin Costner was coming off the huge critical and commercial success of Dances With Wolves, so the studio was going to back him on any crazy-ass idea they came across, including Mad Max with Jet-Skis.

7
Battlefield Earth
2000
Battlefield-Earth
Battlefield Earth is consistently ranked as one of, if not THE worst movie ever made. Unfortunately for science fiction, it was based on a classic novel, so anticipation was fairly high when the bomb dropped. It went on to be nominated for 8 and win 7 Razzies, in 2000. It won for worst picture, director, screenplay, actor, actress, etc. It also won for Worst Screen Couple, which they gave to “John Travolta and anyone sharing the screen with him at any given moment.” And then, to put the icing on the cake, in 2010 it won the Razzies coveted “Worst Movie of the Decade” award.

6
Pearl Harbor
2002

Boy that trailer looked promising. It was, perhaps, the most incongruous movie-trailer-to-actual-film relationship in history. This one was nominated for 8 Razzies, including worst picture, worst actor and worst director for Michael Bay, who decided to make a national tragedy into another one of his super slo-mo action movies. I think Team America: World Police sang it best – the clip is above and the lyrics are here:

I miss you more than Michael Bay missed the mark,
When he made Pearl Harbor.
I miss you more than that movie missed the point,
And that’s an awful lot .
And now, now you’ve gone away,
And all I’m trying to say,
Is Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you.
I need you like Ben Affleck needs acting school,
He was terrible in that film.
I need you like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part,
He’s way better than Ben Affleck.
And now all I can think about is your smile,
And that shitty movie too,
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
(Interlude)
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you.

5
Wild Wild West
1999
Wild-Wild-West
If you want the perfect example of the unnecessary Hollywood remake, look no further than Wild Wild West. This movie managed to take two otherwise great actors (Kevin Kline and Will Smith) and drain them of any joy or talent for 2 hours. You can almost see them NOT wanting to be in the movie while you are watching it. It won 5 of the 9 Razzies it was nominated for in 1999, including, hilariously, worst song. That picture nicely captures Will Smith likely thinking, ‘what the hell am I doing in this movie’?

4
Twister
1996
Twister-Movie
What did we learn from Twister?
1) Hold on to a water pipe and a tornado can pass directly over you with no physical consequences.
2) If you are only feet from a tornado, but you have something really dramatic to say, wind will not affect you or your ability to hear.
3) It rarely rains near tornadoes.
4) Mentioning an f-5 will cause everyone in the room to go silent and spill their drinks.
5) Bill Paxton can predict where tornadoes are going to hit by picking up a hand-full of dirt and letting it fall through his fingers.
6) Jan de Bont is a terrible director

3
2012
2009
2012-Movie
David Sheega from CultureLab.com does a nice job of describing this disaster of a movie:
“…A car speeding through a city in the grip of terrible earthquakes makes insanely unlikely maneuvers, one after the next, then drives straight through an office building as it crumples and emerges unscathed. This sets the tone for the film. We learn not to worry too much for the characters’ safety. We know that if they get on a plane, it will always manage to take flight just as the runway collapses. The unlikely occurrences continue so relentlessly that we are numb to later scientific offenses, among them a tsunami that overturns a ship in the open ocean despite the fact that real tsunamis are tiny before reaching shore, and tropical animals that miraculously avoid freezing to death as they are flown through snow-covered mountains while suspended from helicopters.”

This movie was just so ridiculous I was completely distracted for the entire thing. The part where the mountains mysteriously MOVE to EXACTLY where they need them before crash landing was one of the most forehead-slappingly stupid things I’ve ever seen in a movie. This actually works much better as a comedy.

2
Speed 2: Cruise Control
1997
Speed-2-Cruise-Control
Jan de Bont strikes again with this horrifying movie. They decided to take the same premise from the first movie, and apply it to the SLOWEST form of transportation imaginable. This was like a really long SNL skit, or like that scene in Austin Powers when the stream roller is slowly approaching the screaming guy. I loved the 10 minute crash scene into the cardboard village at the end. Speed 2: Cruise Control was nominated for 8 Razzies, but, astonishingly, only won a single one, for Worst Sequel. But to be fair, that particular year saw perhaps the worst stock of blockbusters in history; it was up against The Postman, Anaconda and the #1 WORST BLOCKBUSTER OF ALL TIME, I give you…

1
Batman and Robin
1997

Nominated for an earth-shattering 11 Razzies, this movie sucks so much that it will actually give you a headache if you attempt to watch it all in one sitting. It has been voted the worst movie of all time by Empire Magazine, and deservedly so. It actually received 3 times as many votes as the #2 selection (Battlefield Earth). There is really nothing I can say to do it justice, so, instead, watch the 3 minute clip above, it’s hilarious.

25 Best Porn Movie Parody Titles

From Grand Theft Orgy to Quantum Deep to Whorecraft, one of the most enduring sub-genres of quality pornography has always been the porn parody – paying homage to (and, ahem, cashing in on) mainstream media franchises for some naughty, hardcore action. At very least, it’s not another installment of the Scary Movie franchise. As a rule, if people are talking or acting then it doesn’t quite count as proper pornography in our book – however, for these upmarket efforts, we’ll make an exception! Here are 25 of the best porn movie titles based on original feature films!

25. American Booty

A middle aged man dreams about having sex with his daughter’s friend, his daughter has a relationship with the neighbor’s son and his wife has sex with the King of Real Estate; with its tale of randy suburbia, American Beauty was ripe for a porno makeover. And so it did come to pass with this tricky number, which simplifies matters by having some grad school studs move into Monique and Midori’s flat. To the point, we say, and cut out all that crap about bags floating in the wind.

24. Missionary Position Impossible 2

Just like the Tom Cruise film of the very similar name, the Missionary Position Impossible movie became a franchise, and just like Cruise and co, the cast of MPI would do extraordinarily dangerous (and yet cavalier) things like lighting dynamite at hip height. Points are awarded for a punning tagline: “It feels so good… should you decide to accept it.”

23. Twinklight

Love Edward, hate Bella? That’s because: Vampires. Are. Gay. Emphasising the point Twinklight does the obvious and crosses Twilight with twinks – the younger, slenderer, more hairless gay man-about-town, for those not in the know. Just think RPatz, if you’re still confused. As the film’s tagline asks: “What is life if lived alone?” It then goes on to answer with rutting boy vamps.

22. The Da Vinci Load 2: Angels and Semen

While The Da Vinci Load might have adequately spoofed Dan Brown’s conspiracy thriller, the sequel raised the game a bar by adding a double pun – which preceded the Da Vinci Code’s sequel by two years. Cracking, filthy stuff! We do rather suspect that the ‘symbology’ on offer here might be of the rather obvious kind.

21. A Tale of Two Titties

Picking up the title of Charles Dickens’s classic novel about Paris during the French revolution, this is actually a historical anthology piece, including tales about princes, princesses and giants. And of course lots and lots of shagging. Our only bone of contention with the title is that there are far more than two titties on offer here.

20. Titty Titty Gang Bang

While this might have less than nothing to do with Ian Fleming’s children’s film, it’s a marvellous use of a parody title. And who on Earth would want to watch a porn version of Chitty Chitty, with a flying car and the child snatcher? Yikes.

19. San Fernando Jones and the Temple of Poon

You’re going to be disappointed – San Fernando isn’t the giant woman on the middle of the DVD cover; Fernie is actually Ron Jeremy (as seen in the bottom right corner), the most famous and most rat like of all pornographic entertainers. Nevertheless, with a fedora, whip and an intimate familiarity with the exotic secrets of the Orient, Indy was made for porn. And poon is certainly sexier than doom.

18. Raiders of the Lost Arse

Extending to a two-parter, here’s another Indy inspired epic, this time of the distinctly more masculine kind, if you want to call it that. We assume that in this caper Indy is rather more fond of the trouser snake than was previously thought. Dr Jones never did seem to much like the ladies, for all the time he spent in their company, and it was with a certain amount of revulsion that we greeted the prospect that Shia The Beouf was to be the wee Indie Jr. We can only assume that the makers of Lost Arse (‘arse’ means bottom, by the way) were considerably more appalled.

17. Edward Penishands

Take Tim Burton’s tortured modern Frankenstein and then replace his arms with a pair of gigantic meat truncheons. Porntastic! He won’t be trimming your hedges but he’s essentially perfect for porn. And if you think like the makers of Penishands did, you’ll probably find that hilarious. Spawning a sequel, we can only imagine that this one did better than the Johhny Depp original.

16. Analyze These

This could very well be the actual title of an Analyze This sequel (see Analyze That starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal). However, fortunately for the makers of this Horizon DVDs movie, it isn’t. Naturally, the film follows the well worn path of psychoanalysis turning to lesbian sex scenes. Only that analysis was apparently mainly below the neckline. Ba-zing!

15. Forrest Hump

While Forrest Gump had a fair amount of sex of one kind or another, it was generally of the miserable kind, as Forrest and Jenny wound their way through America’s mid to late 20th century history. Hence, of course, parody ahoy! The bench, the box of chocolates, hippies having sex. What more could you want?

14. Bi-tanic

Sch-wing. The somewhat marginal bisexual film genre invariably struggles to get the word ‘bi’ into all its titles, but with this parody number the only way was up. Imagine if Leo and Billy Zane could have just got their rocks off and then everyone would have been happy after all – because, as we recall, Leo only died because Kate hoiked him off a floating log after she ditched a lifeboat.

13. Tits a Wonderful Life

Identify a classic feel good film and add tits. It’s magical. From the director of Foreskin Gump and A League of their Moan, Tits takes a different route to cheering George up, leading him away from suicide with lots and lots of sex. That’d make anyone happy.

12. Pulp Friction

Replacing Fiction with some erotic Friction, this is one thoroughly conscientious parody. Remember Quentin Tarantino’s magnum opus? Well imagine the next thing to happen after every scene was some sex. And remember all that violence? Replace that with sex as well.

11. Sluts and the City

When you’re taking the word ‘sex’ out of a title in order to porn it up, something strange is going on (however people might have described SATC). However, with the franchise moving to the cinema a (loose) remake became inevitable – and just how difficult could it possibly be to take four women and place them in a series of faintly unlikely sex scenes around New York? Bon voyage, Big Apple.

10. A Clockwork Orgy

Take one of the most controversial movies of all time, famous for its sex and violence, and, er, move the violence around a bit – and you have a porno classic! It also reportedly has an acceptable plot and some good jokes. Bring on the droogs and the ultraviolence!

9. Flesh Gordon

“Planet Porno bombards Earth with sex rays… send for Flesh!” If that isn’t a great tagline for a movie, we don’t know what is.
Looking like the spiritual successor to Barbarella (which might as well have been a porn spoof in itself), Flesh Gordon makes some terrific use of the outside the trousers, crotch hugging pants. Which should only really ever find their home in a porno. Right?

8. Rebel Without a Condom

While it might have taken over 40 years for James Dean’s most famous movie to inspire a porno, as a genuine 1950s set period piece, featuring motorcycle rebels et al, Condom’s makers cannot be said to have skimped on it! Like the porn Grease – but with choppers.

7. Honey I Blew Everybody

While it’s always disappointing to hear that your partner blew up the baby or shrunk the kids, what you really don’t want to hear is that she blew everyone. While this has almost zip to do with the film it’s playing on, it’s a great use of a great title. Moreover, it does exactly what it says on the tin.

6. The Sex Files

Mulder and Scully spent a long, long time pondering their will-they-won’t-they relationship (complete with abductions and miraculous pregnancies). In the surprisingly straight faced Sex Files they definitely, definitely will. Oddly enough, The Sex Files almost looks more like The X Files than the two horrible movies that the franchise has managed to cough out so far.

5. Whorey Potter and the Sorcerer’s Balls

Harry Potter might not seem an obvious match for porn – too many boys, too many under 18s. However, that didn’t worry the makers of Whorrey Potter, advertised as the first 3D gay feature porn film (put the words in whatever order you want). Featuring Whorrey and Voldemorecock (who gets lead billing on the DVD cover), you can imagine where this is going. It even won the Grabby award for Best Comedy. Magic.

4. Sexbusters

Take one of the greatest family films of the ’80s and add sex. What could be more obvious? While the film might have skimped on costumes (t-shirts) and effects (the Ecto-1 is a people carrier) and the title might seem to question the premise (they’re here to bust sex?), this was a great, great idea – and that’s a great poster. What’s more, hailing from 1984, this is genuine vintage material.

3. Womb Raider

Once upon a time, someone magnified a platform heroine’s boobs by ten times and thereby created a computer gaming sensation. Add Angelina Jolie in some hot pants and the adult film industry decided enough was enough and made the Tomb Raider porn parody, which to our satisfaction came with a double pun – Cara Loft, Womb Raider. We can only assume that Cara Loft is an enthusiastic lesbian. One for the annals of history.

2. The Whore of the Rings II

Despite a striking lack of female cast members (Liv Tyler was a total rope in), The Lord of the Rings was a film that had sex in the title and sex on the brain – and with that much sexual tension who wouldn’t want to toss a hobbit around a bit? As for the porn parody franchise it spawned… well, while it perhaps confused things by having the rings melted down into two magic dildos by the second installment, The Whore of the Rings II made up for it by featuring scenes with dragons, dwarves and monsters. And chainmail clad babes.

1. American Cream Pie

Simple, to the point and effective. American Pie was a movie about juvenile sex gags that defined itself upon a violatory act of self pleasuring. Then the porn stars added five little letters to remove any level of innuendo or doubt and made a film about a porn finishing technique. Pure filth.

10 Been There Done Thats of Fashion

10. Tights
175
With tights being worn by women of all ages today, it’s hard to believe that they were worn by men for centuries! Hose (as it was called back in the day) was worn by men from every class, with the upper class having theirs made out of fine silk and wool, and the lower class’s being made from homespun materials. By the 17th century, they had gradually been replaced by breeches and stockings. Think about that when you see the cute skirt and tights combo in your favorite magazine!

9. Gray haired young women
Image
Say what? Come again? Yes, gray hair has been seen on young women like Lady gaga and Kelly Osbourne, recently. I know, it seems somewhat edgy and futuristic after you get past the shock, but these ladies are really centuries behind in this hair trend. In the 18th century gray was an extremely popular hair color. Young women like Marie Antoinette powdered their sky high hair soft shades of gray. Sometimes the hair was powdered with other pastel colors, but gray was the most popular.

Slaves to this fashion: See above

8. Artificial nails
Akmanthor
Nail salons are so full of women getting french manicures and airbrushed holiday pictures (snowflakes and whatnot) that it’s hard to believe that artificial nails go all the way back to the ancient Egyptians! Theirs were made from beautifully decorated bone, ivory and gold. The more elaborate they were, the wealthier the person was who wore them. Modern acrylic nails are mainly for cosmetic reasons, and don’t indicate wealth, but if you think about it, the upkeep on artificial nails could be seen as wealth indicators because of the money a woman has to spend to get them filled in every few weeks.

7. Colored wedding dresses
6A00E54F9Cbc5E8834011571164E82970B-800Wi
For most of the 20th century, if your wedding gown was bought specifically for your wedding (and not your best dress) it was white. Today, many wedding dress designers are making colored dresses, which is seen as fashion forward and different. But, up until the mid-1800s, most wedding gowns were colored. In the middle ages, wealthy brides were swathed in yards of richly colored fabric on their wedding day. Phillipa of England, not Queen Victoria, was actually the first documented bride to wear a white dress, but it wasn’t common until brides started copying Victoria’s wedding gown, in 1840.
Slaves to this fashion: Gwen Stefani, Dita Von Teese

6. Bleached Hair
Images-1
With all the bleached blonds you see in Hollywood it is easy to see the style as a thoroughly modern one. Can you imagine seeing them in 16th century Venice? Hair bleaching was done elsewhere, but especially in Venice and hot, sunny regions. Since commercial hair dye would not be available for another 400 years or so, women would sit in the sun for hours with their hair spread over a crownless hat, while herb pastes made from black sulfur, honey and onion skin were spread all over their hair. Mmmm, must have smelled lovely…

5. Platform Shoes
Pink Chopine
Most people know that platform shoes were a big hit in the 70′s, and are back now, but a lot of people don’t know that platform shoes were around over 600 years ago. Called chopines, they were worn by wealthy women to keep their feet and dresses out of the filthy streets. The higher the chopine, the wealthier the wearer. Some were over 20 inches tall! They were so popular in Spain that a large part of the cork supply was used just for chopines. I, for one, am happy that the platform shoes now are not so drastic, imagine all the broken bones…

4. Grecian inspired dresses

The Greek goddess look is very “in” right now, with the style popping up at proms and weddings all over the world, but this trend first came about in 1790′s France. With the revolution approaching, no one wanted to be mistaken for an aristocrat, so the opposite of their luxe, heavy, made up dress emerged, called directoire. Although not as popular as it is today, the idealized Greek and Roman dresses, with their graceful draping and lack of sleeves allowed women freedom from restrictive dress that they had not experienced since the time of the actual ancient Greek women.

3. Heavy eyeliner

Search “scene” on Google images, and you will find thousands of pictures of girls with black eyeliner drawn around their eyes, raccoon style. This makeup trend seems to be recent, but it’s not. Back to the ancient Egyptians again! They used kohl to outline their eyes, both to protect them from the harsh desert sun and for beauty reasons. Some people also think they thought this would protect them from the “evil eye”. Men also used the ancient eyeliner, so “guyliner” isn’t new either!

2. Skinny Jeans/pants

One of the most widespread fashions of the 2000′s, (and my least favorite) skinny jeans are sometimes worn to rebel or call attention to oneself (especially if they are in neon colors or distracting patterns) and that’s what they were worn for when they came around the first time! Back in the 1950′s, teenagers and 20somethings didn’t want to dress like their parents any more in suits and skirts. Designers realized this and came out with what we would call skinny jeans. “Cigarette” pants for women were usually cropped to ankle length or shorter, and “drainpipe” jeans and pants became popular for men.

1. Changing skin color
Renaissance
Nowadays, a lot of people in the western world want a dark tan. From ancient times to the early 1900′s, women wanted smooth, porcelain white skin. They believed that only the wealthy could afford to have pale white skin because the lower classes had to work in the sun and were, therefore, tanned. A lead based powder was often used to make their skin even whiter, often to deadly results. The desire to have extremely white skin was so strong, that even though women knew that lead is poisonous, they continued to use it. Then Coco Chanel came back from a trip to the French Riviera in the 1920′s, and her fans went wild over the tan she had gotten while there, and started laying in the sun slathered in baby oil. In the 70′s, tanning beds were made, and have developed into a $5 billion industry. Although they are aware of the dangers of skin cancer, like their predecessors, many women still continue to go to the tanning salon multiple times a week. I can’t decide which one is worse…
